John C. Briggs is a Mechanical Engineer working for the Fraunhofer Center for Manufacturing Innovation at Boston University in Brookline, Massachusetts. His day job consists of developing first-of-their-kind machines that push University ideas into fully functioning prototypes to bridge the gap between the University and the demanding world of venture capital. Recent projects include plant-based vaccines, laser coin-cutting for the U.S. Mint, wave-energy harvesting, and numerous cutting-edge corporate projects that he cannot discuss.

Away from his day job, John is a clean-energy advocate with a strong interest in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and electric cars. Since 2008, he has reduced his home electricity consumption by 75 percent, and provides the remainder with solar photovoltaic panels. He has also designed and installed solar hot-water panels for domestic hot-water production and to displace the home heating oil otherwise used for that purpose. Currently driving a gas-guzzling Toyota Prius hybrid (when not cycling to work), John hopes to become an electric-car owner in the near future.
